Why Bees Are Not a Payment Method in 2026 For Honeybee Removal From Structures

Occasionally I get contacted by someone looking for a wall cut to remove honeybees from a structure with the expectation that the service will be free. They assume the bees themselves carry guaranteed value that offsets the work. That assumption is not true.

A colony living in a wall, soffit, or chimney can be heavily infested with mites or already compromised by disease. Even a seemingly healthy-looking hive may reject the box it is transferred into within days and simply swarm away, leaving the beekeeper with an empty hive and no bees. For these reasons, the insects themselves are not a reliable form of payment.

When someone contacts me who truly cannot afford professional removal, I do what I can. That often means placing the job on a wait list and getting to it when schedule and resources allow, or referring the caller to another beekeeper who may be in a better position to help at that moment. Charity has its place. Expecting free labor as the default does not.

Bee removal is a skilled trade. It requires proper equipment, experience working at heights or in tight spaces, knowledge of colony behavior, and the ability to extract bees without destroying the structure or endangering the people living in it. Many of us who perform these jobs rely on that seasonal revenue to carry us through the winter months when income drops off. Treating the work as something that should be given away undermines the trade and the people who practice it.

One final note: never threaten a beekeeper that you will simply kill the bees if you cannot get them removed for free. That approach ends the conversation more often than not. Most of us would rather hang up than negotiate under that kind of pressure.

Honeybees are valuable. Professional removal of them from buildings is valuable work. The two are not interchangeable.
